PNG Independence Day - September 16

Today, Papua New Guinea celebrates their independence. The close geographic proximity and historical links between Australia and PNG have given the country a unique position within Australia's foreign relations – depicting the relationship as one of Australia’s most complex and wide-ranging partners. From the mid-2000s, PNG experienced over a decade of fairly robust economic growth. This was largely driven by high international prices for PNG’s exports (including agriculture), conservative economic policies and construction activity related to the Papua New Guinea LNG project.
